Define the purchase decision
Coal-tailings thickening is a solids-and-water duty with its own feed and recycle constraints. Purchasing a flocculant for that stream does not automatically qualify it for flotation or every other coal-washing treatment stage.
Keep the proposed product identity connected to the tested suspension and the intended separator.
Identify the tailings and reagents
Record fine-coal and mineral fractions where known, feed solids, particle distribution, pH and upstream treatment. Keep reagent and recycle-water context with each sample. Changes in the fines or clay fraction can alter demand without an obvious change in total feed mass.
Use the representative sample method before ranking products.
Balance rate and compacted material
Compare settling, residual overflow solids, compacted bed and response to a defined shear challenge. The endpoint guide prevents fast large floc from masking poor fine capture.
A product that delivers clear water but unmanageable underflow is not qualified for a plant whose bottleneck is discharge or downstream filtration.
Confirm the recycle boundary
Document where clarified water returns and whether residual fines or chemistry affect another operation. Where that risk matters, include an appropriate downstream confirmation rather than assuming visible clarity proves compatibility. Hold feedwell and mechanical conditions stable during the initial product comparison.
Retain realistic residence and bed observations; one short step may benefit from inventory established under the incumbent product.
Check a misleading apparent improvement
If tailings overflow passes clarity limits but the receiving process reacts differently, preserve both results rather than calling the polymer wholly successful or wholly defective. Qualification may be adequate for thickening and incomplete for recycle. The outstanding downstream acceptance must be resolved before unrestricted repeat supply is assumed.
Retain the comparison conditions and any unresolved acceptance requirement with the proposed purchase.
Set the release boundary
Approve the candidate for the tested tailings and water route. Keep flotation performance or other downstream acceptance separate unless it has actually been included in qualification.
| Purchase requirement | Required evidence | Release condition |
|---|---|---|
| Feed | Fines and reagent description | Trial addresses the actual tailings |
| Thickening | Rate, clarity and bed evidence | Candidate meets simultaneous limits |
| Recycle | Defined return-water destination | Unverified downstream claims are excluded |
