Build the primary floc first
Set the coagulant dose and rapid-mix condition against the raw-water demand. Record pH before and after coagulation, alkalinity where relevant and the appearance of the destabilized particles before polymer enters.
Anionic polymer cannot reliably repair a primary stage that moves between severe undercoagulation and charge reversal. Stabilize that stage or map both variables with a planned matrix.
Protect the order of addition
Place enough time and mixing between coagulant and polymer for primary destabilization, but avoid aging the pin floc until it becomes difficult to bridge. Add diluted polymer where it can contact the full flow under controlled lower-energy mixing.
Document actual injection points and travel times. Pipe distance alone does not define residence when flow changes.
Measure the clarifier result
Track floc formation, settling, clarified-water turbidity or suspended solids, sludge blanket and sludge withdrawal. Include downstream filtration or recycle effects if they control plant performance.
A large floc photograph is not a release criterion. Use matched feed and overflow samples after the hydraulic residence has passed.
Control chemical cost as a pair
Optimize coagulant and polymer in stages, then verify the combined window. Excess coagulant can make polymer response look easy while increasing sludge mass, corrosivity or pH demand.
Compare total chemical mass, sludge handling, clarified-water quality and operating stability. Retain the sequence and active-dose calculation with the approved products.
